Must-Have CBD Travel Toiletries

Must-Have CBD Travel Toiletries

Back in 2015, researchers found a genetic variant believed to explain why some people seemed destined to travel, a “wanderlust” gene linked to adventurousness and the desire to seek new experiences. Although this relatively recent discovery could explain why you might find planning for a vacation hot-spot, weekend getaway, or an extended road trip so uplifting, knowing that your desire to travel could be genetic won’t make packing your bags any easier.

Whether you’re taking an extended vacation or planning an overnight stay across town, the struggle is real. Some items are non-negotiable, but you only have so much room in your bag. How can you save space? Travel experts often recommend choosing versatile pieces you can mix and match, rolling your t-shirts and jeans instead of folding, and leaving full-sized toiletries behind.1,2

What Are Toiletries?

The full-sized toiletries so many travel advisors suggest leaving home are the personal care products you use every day to keep your breath fresh, your body clean, and to maintain your appearance. The list also includes hair care and styling products, deodorants and antiperspirants, color cosmetics, toothpaste, contact lens solutions, and skincare essentials.3

Why Should I Leave Full-Sized Toiletries Home?

Many toiletries are sold in quantities much larger than you’ll need while you’re away from home. When you pack your toiletries in their original containers, you’re taking up a lot of space you could easily use for other travel essentials. You’ll also be adding a lot of unnecessary weight to your bag. Although wasted space or added weight might not seem all that consequential while traveling by car, ship, or train, airlines have strict regulations for carry-on luggage.

What Toiletries Can I Take Through Airport Security?

Airlines generally allow most full-sized toiletries in checked luggage. However, the requirements for carry-on bags are very strict. According to TSA regulations, all the creams, gels, liquids, and pastes in your carry-on must fit into a single quart-sized bag. The bag must be resealable, clear, and no item can weigh more than 3.4 oz.4 That’s why so many people who travel frequently keep a supply of sample-size toiletries on hand.

Whether you’re traveling by land, sea, or sky, sample-size products can help you save a considerable amount of space. When you shop for sample sizes at your local department store or pharmacy, you’ll find miniature antiperspirants, small bottles of shampoo, and tubes of toothpaste that weigh less than an ounce.

Are Sample-Sized Toiletries the Best Option for Travel?

Sample sizes are great for travel when you can find a brand that’s served you well in the past. But most often, the selection is rather limited, and you’ll often pay much more per ounce. That’s why so many people who want to travel light prefer packing their favorite toiletries in refillable jars, spray bottles, and small cosmetic containers. Not only could using refillable containers save you a considerable amount of money over time, their also better for the environment.5

Are There Any Specific Toiletries Women Should Pack?

When it comes to packing essential toiletries, men and women aren’t all that different. When you’re packing for two, you’ll both need body wash, shampoo, an antiperspirant or deodorant, toothpaste, a hairbrush, toothbrush, and (possibly) razors. After you’ve covered the products needed for basic hygiene, you’ll also want to pack hair conditioner, styling products, and the cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers you use to care for your skin, the products that help you look and feel your best.

If you wear makeup, you can save a considerable amount of room in your bag by filling small cosmetic containers or contact lens cases with primer, liquid foundation, and concealer. You can save even more space by packing a non-comedogenic oil to remove stubborn mascara and eyeliner, tame flyaways, soften rough cuticles, shave your legs, and deep condition your hair.

Now That I’ve Packed the Essentials, What Other Toiletries Might I Need?

Once you’ve packed the essentials, the products you need to get through the day, you’ll also want to be sure to pack hand sanitizer, sunscreen, lip balm, any feminine hygiene products you might need, and a nail file. If you wear contact lenses, consider packing a small bottle of rewetting drops, or pre-fill a contact lens case with a multipurpose solution so you can remove your lenses if they get uncomfortable while you’re traveling.6

Depending on your itinerary, you might also want to consider packing a small first aid kit, an over-the- counter pain reliever, or a small package of tissues. If you’re staying in a hotel (or motel), you can save even more room in your bag by calling ahead to ask if the venue provides complimentary soap, shampoo, or shower gel.7

Have You Overpacked? How Much Do You Really Need?

More people tend to overpack than under-pack. So, how will you know if you’re guilty of over-packing? You’ll come home with clothes you never wore, shoes that sat in your bag, and toiletries you never opened. Although there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for every “over-packer,” you can learn to trim the excess baggage.

The next time you’re planning a trip, create a starting point by following your instincts. First, plan an outfit for each activity on your itinerary. Then trim your packing list by assigning 2 “looks” to each article of clothing. An example would be a tank that can be worn on its own with a pair of shorts, and again with slacks and a blazer later in the week. Try to remove anything from your packing list that is not versatile enough to wear twice. Then consider eliminating another 1/3 to ½ of your packing list.

This suggestion works best for trips lasting 5 days or longer. You can get away with packing half as many outfits by setting aside an hour or so for laundry. If washing your clothes during your travels seems like a reasonable option, consider investing in a small (2-3oz) bottle of castile soap, a product you can use as a cleanser, body wash, shampoo (for non-color-treated hair), and laundry detergent.8,9

What You Need to Know Before Traveling with CBD

Under the terms of the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD is federally legal as long as the THC content is 0.3 % or less. Although you should have no problems boarding a flight with CBD at most US airports, be sure to check the legality of CBD products at your destination. The terms of the US Farm Bill left the legality of hemp-derived CBD to the discretion of individual states.

You may also want to consider keeping your products in their original containers and printing the third-party test results on our product pages. Printing and packing the certificate of analysis is the only way to confirm the THC content of your skincare products as you travel. Although flying with CBD is easy, many major cruise lines, bus companies, and railways do not allow passengers to travel with hemp-derived CBD products.  If you have questions or concerns, call ahead for clarification before trying to board.

When traveling internationally, you’ll need to know the legality of hemp-derived CBD products where you are, where you’re going, and at every location along the way. Even in European countries where CBD products are widely accepted, the THC content of full spectrum CBD made in the US is over the legal limit. Although it’s much easier to travel with CBD skincare products than just a few years ago, knowing the laws can help keep your long-anticipated vacation worry-free.10,11
